This rare Gothic figure from the Lower Rhine presents Saint Peter, often referred to as 'the Prince of the Apostles', in a compelling sculptural form. Dating to the 15th century, the carving is executed in gilt oak and retains much of its original polychromy, offering a profound insight into the devotional art of the period.
Carved almost entirely in the round, the figure depicts Saint Peter seated upon a cathedra, his bearded visage framed by the distinctive triple tiara, signifying his role as the first Pope. In his left hand, he holds the symbolic keys, while his right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. The drapery of his robe sweeps gracefully across his body, secured at the chest by the remnants of a hexagonal brooch, adding a subtle detail to his authoritative presence.
The polychrome, likely renewed in the 16th century, displays rich floral motifs and brocade patterns, characteristic of the era's decorative applications. Two medallions, subtly integrated into the design, depict Christ and the Virgin Mary, further enhancing the devotional narrative of the piece. The layered colours and gilt accents, though aged, still convey the original intent of grandeur and spiritual significance.
